Farmers asking…

When will we finish harvest?

For some area farmers, the question is when will we start harvest, let alone finish it!  Almost continuous rain since April has made a “challenging harvest’ an understatement.  Last Monday’s U. S. Dept of Agriculture reports indicate nearly 10.4 billion bushels of corn and 1.82 billion bushels of soybeans are awaiting harvest.

In Illinois, we are 14% corn harvested compared with a 77% average.  For soybeans, 33% is harvested with an 86% average.  This means that each day the crops are still in the fields means greater deterioration of the crop.

I just hate to read this kind of news in the paper.  My heart goes out to the farmers who have suffered this year because of the excessive rainfall.  It is too bad we can’t send some of the rain to Australia where it has been badly needed.  Oh well, that is just the way it is.  Usually we have a dry hot summer.  This year it has been neither dry or hot.  I think our actual 90 degree days amounted to 2 and that was in the month of June.  Normal would be 18 – 20 days for the month of August alone.

It is a beautiful sunshiny day which started out at 32 degrees and is up to 50 right now.  As soon as I get my lunch digested I may go out and tackle the beans.  Tackle being the operative word.  Smile

I have put the Halloween candy away in hopes that I will forget where I put it.  Wink

Lots of corn still in the fields here too. Yesterday it was like a dust storm seeing the harvestors out picking soybeans. At least they're dry. Enjoy the sunshine today.

I hear you about the farmers as where I come from it was the fishing and both of them depend on the weather. Although with fishing it was the wind that made things worse. I am sure if there is anything to be saved if and when they do get it harvest it will be a high price we will have to pay for it. In the end it is the poor farmers who will suffer the most.
Good luck with those beans. Take care hun...................Rusty ((HUGS))

we used to leave the candy out in a plastic bowl late Halloween when we turned off the lights back in the times when we observed Halloween (work) and by morning it was empty.

Farming has to be the hardest job in the world. Now days farmers have to have a job along with farming just to support their families. I'm sure glad I don't have one of those bean trees here, what a pain that must be for you. Well don't over do it cleaning them up. I was smart this year, I bought candy that I don't like just so I wouldn't eat it lol.
Have a great day Beth

Good luck with those beans!! I know that Michigan farmers have teh same concern... they're crops have taken longer to ripen for harvest because of all the cool weather... We needed rain down here, but we've finally received some to end our draught...

I too feel for the farmers. Though we all would have liked a few more warmer days for our own reasons, they're need is so much more and benefits us all.

It seems a lots of in nature cause damage ourlives at everywhere that too hot or too much water non of them helps the farmers. the other day just in the short time cause of floods then the faemers had lost all their croft (vegtable). we started concern about this hot weather that's not summer yet.
Enjoy your weather.

I do believe that later on down the line this will effect us all by much higher prices. Mother nature is cruel sometimes. I feel for those people too. Not ready for the cold temps either.. My heater is running every night.

Every year is hard for the farmers. No wonder the younger generation wants to get out of farming. You work so hard, and so much is out of your control. You just pray for the right kind of weather, and do the best with what you get. Not an easy life. And when they do badly, prices go up and we then suffer too. Maybe we need to remember what they go through the next time they have to raise prices on these things. Good luck staying away from the candy. I think most people buy what they like in case they are left with some. Maybe we need to start buying what we DON'T like. Then we won't have to hide it from ourselves. LOL.

My Heart goes out too all the farmers . It really is a gamble each and every season . You take the risk. Invest and invest all to get the crop in the ground, baby it thought the growning season and if the weather is good get it off the field.. Let alone everything else that could hit it beside the weather. We had one crop of Hay when we should have had two. We did get everything harvested. Some in our area havent. It snowed. Our snow is gone . The wind is blowing and the Sun is shinning . Im sure there may be a few farmers that are scambling and will be working all night long to get the rest of what they have in. What I have seen here is Canola that is left unharvested. That crop takes so long to cure after its been cut.
Enjoy your Sunny day Beth. Good luck with the Beans.

It has been one of "those" years for us too though not because of rain. We had a horrible cold snap out of the blue that ruined what would have been a bumper crop of sugar beets and there were very few pumpkins to be had this year because of the same. Rumors abound that the very cold start for us may mean a lighter winter...that won't save the crops but it will make it easier on everyone and their heat bills.

Thank you Paul!! :-D What I actually did was to take the lawn mower out and mowed those babies to smithereens, whatever a smithereen is.

That is ashame about the harvesting. We will all pay if the stuff never makes it to market. Good luck with the beans. You could have given them out for Halloween thus killing two birds with one stone if you in fact went bird hunting and were low on stones.

Someone has got to invent ah machine to hover over the ground and harvest crop! They could always hire hand pickers but would eat up the profit. Speaking of eating the freezer is good to hide the candy. Have a nice day Beth!
