Goats to save a buck…

ANDOVER, Mass.  ~ A Boston suburb has some new landscapers that will work for food – a half dozen goats clearing and maintaining an overgrown public meadow.

Under a pilot program in Andover, Lucy McKain’s dairy goats will rotate their grazing around the meadow for an all you can eat buffet of grass, brush and other growth.  The goats can clear as much as a half acre every three days at no cost.

The fact it is free is important to Andover officials, since money is tight and they couldn’t afford the heavy equipment, fuel and labor needed to clean up the meadow.

If the program is a success, Andover officials want to make more public parkland available to grazing animals.

I read this in the morning paper and I loved it.  How Green can you get?  Paul, do you think you can get by and get some pictures of this for us.  I would love to see that.

I haven’t felt well for the last few days and have been laying around doing nothing.  I do feel better today so I am going out in a few minutes to try and get some pictures in my front yard.  It has stopped raining for a bit and what is left of the trees is gorgeous color.  Lots of beans laying out there too.

I hope you all are having a wonderful day.

I hope you feel better! Goat mowing, WONDERFUL! n the town I was born in there use to be goats on a hill and when the goats were at the bottom of the hill it meant rain, up top meant good weather. They finally took the goats away which was so sad! Happy to hear they're finding good uses for them!

Dear Bean Marie, Smile! What a treasure we sometimes find in our own yards. When I lived on the farm there were sheep and horses to do most of the lawn care. When they were gone I spent many fine days on the tractor mowing. Have a great night and
as ever bean well

I had no idea my beans were so expensive. LOL I found this info at http://www.wildpantry.com/beans.htm
Anyway my tree is a honey locust tree.

honey locust pod
Beans/Pods/ - available
$12.00/lb. dry whole pod, plus shipping.
The honey locust is a North American tree. It was occasionally naturalized in Central and Southern Europe. Other common names used for it include Sweet bean, Sweet locust and Honeyshuck.
The pulp around the seeds in the pods is edible, being sweet and molasses-like, and sugar can be extracted from it.
Pods generally contain 12-14% sugar, although in selected cultivators this rises to up to 40%. Various North Americans recipes exist for making beer from the pulp.
The tender young pods are edible when cooked. Also edible are the seeds, raw or cooked; the young seeds taste like raw peas. The seeds are sweet, containing up to 30% sugar, also 10-22% protein, 0.8-4.2% fat, and are high in calcium (275mg/100g) and phosphorous (315mg/100g). Roasted seeds can be used as a coffee.
The pods are a source of ethanol production. Pod yields of 2.5 tons of dry matter per Hectare (85 trees/Ha producing 30kg pods dry weight) would yield 730 litres of ethanol which is only 20% of that obtained from a hectare of sugar beet.
As a sustainable and a low input source, though, it is much more viable.
$3.50/4 oz. ground pods/meal, plus shipping.
$2.00/seeds - pack of 20, plus shipping.

Sorry you have not been feeling well, I guess its the change in weather that tends to get us down huh? I love the fall but I know what follows and I for one am not looking forward to winter. I hate being cooped up and not being able to get outside. You take care and like Paul what kind of beans are you talking about that comes from that tree? Love ya, take care, hugs, Patsy

Andover is about 25 miles north of me. I'd have to find out where exactly. Andover is a fairly well to do place but the budget crunch is on everywhere I guess. It is also Jay Leno's home town.
I know I've asked you before Beth, but I've forgotten. What kind of beans do you have or should I ask what kind of beans are coming from that tree?

That's a super idea. I hope Paul can get some pictures of that. The sun is shining brightly here but it is windy and chilly out. Hope your pictures turn out good.

In order to clear an area at ah time they tie a long rope to a tire so the goat eats round an round then move to the next area. I have seen this in Wisconsin and it is a hoot to see. The goats are happy too. I don't recall you mentioning you were under the weather. Glad your feeling better today. Now don't overdue, like picking up beans. Have a nice day Beth.

There was a goat the neighbors passed around to munch up their yards. H e was chained to a 4x4 so he had some mobility and he couldn't eat through the chain. there were some well kept yards around and no noisey lawn mowers.

Interesting, it just goes to show that you cannot throw out the baby with the bath water. See how modern times have to go back to the old way of doing things. Not all old things should be done away with in light of modern technology.

Thanks for sharing. have a great weekend

I remember growing up and haning out at my grandpa's he had goats, they were fun to play with and the milk, well you had to learn to like it. Rambling is right, but make it a big piece of cake.
The story was good.
